Developing characters as a screenwriter:

Maybe this will help fellow screenwriters and/or be interesting to those who just enjoy films and learning about what creatives do to create.

Inspiration comes from so many different places when you're writing. Right now I'm writing a script (thriller) and I'll find a song or list of music that seems to fit a character perfectly and I’ll listen to that while I write. Especially when I’m first introducing a character into the script and I need to find their voice. The music allows me to develop them by just going with the flow, allowing my imagination to just feel the mood of the music and going on instinct. Kind of like dancing freely with no shame or overthinking. Such as this villain I'm introducing to the hero of my story for the first time. I need to define him not only to the viewers but to the hero and music seems to really help me do that. He's charismatic, bold, in your face and the song that is inspiring me is by The Animals- House of the Rising Sun.

As a writer the things we see and hear influence us and it's important to use those tools. I also suggest going going for a walk and listen to the music that gets you in the headspace of your script so your imagination can wonder. If you’re writing a particalr scene that’s lest say fun and free- try listening to that kind of music and allow your imagination to find that scene and develop it in a free thinking way, kind of like stream of conscience and you’ll find it can help.

Listening to music sets moods and paints pictures in your head but if you give it a direction without forcing it, that music can be extremely helpful in developing your next script for your upcoming film. As a filmmaker I find this very helpful to me when I’m writing and I hope it helps you too.
