The things I saw on the ground today while walking though Prospect Park.
This was the first thing I saw. A bowl full of half smoked weed in it. The bowl looked like a turtle in the grass which I thought was interesting. I liked how the green glass lay against the dirt and the grass. I also liked my reflection which brings another interesting element.
Instead of taking typical beautiful shots of the park I decided to challenge myself and take pictures of things I saw on the ground.
Normally people would most likely not give these things any thought but today I did. My objective was to draw attention to them so I become more aware of the easily forgotten. Maybe I’m searching for something inside myself that I forgot and maybe I need to take a closer look. Maybe these pictures I took will remind me of that. Maybe these images will remind you too.
I love bees and I’m not sure if this one was dead or not but it wasn’t moving sadly. I didn’t want to bother it so I took a quick shot. The way the colors are picked up on the wings really excites me. To me this is a beautiful image because the way it’s framed with the grass slopping over which draws the eye to the main subject. There is a yin and yang element with the dirt and the darker dead grass along with some nice pops of color. Placement of the bee is also important in what makes me love this shot.
Oh no a baby left their toy. The color of the blue popped out from across the park (well I was only about 10 feet when I noticed) and drew me in as I came across this simple and yet alluring image. The placement of the toy was important because when you’re talking about something so simple, placement is really important. The way it’s surrounded by grass gives the image a vibrancy that is uplifting and fun. The yellows, greens and blue all go together which is why I took this.
This is something I normally would never take a picture of because we see so many cigarette butts all over the ground. People flick these without a thought so I wanted to draw attention to that and put a sort of bullseye on this subject. The sticks, leaves and little splash of green all come together and right in the center our cigarette which should not be there somehow makes its comfortable home. Though it’s out of place it seems to blend in like it belongs. It doesn’t which is important to note. Maybe a smoker will be inspired enough to throw their butts in the trash- unlikely but I will keep trying.
I was standing near the a pond and I saw this orange ball out of place so I trued to take a picture that looked interesting by framing in the green and capturing the mud and spots of water. There is a pop of color which plays nice with the darker mud which drew me in. I personally don’t litter and I wish I didn’t see trash when I walk through the park but as an artist I like the story this picture tells me. I think about the dog that this toy belongs to and why it’s owner forgot this. Maybe it was too dirty or maybe the dog couldn’t find it or got distracted and the owner didn’t care enough to look for it? In any event I am an observer and I took the shot.
