Break Through Writer's Block with a 13-Minute Writer's Sprint

A good tip for when you're feeling stuck or can't figure out a scene in your script? Try a writer's sprint.

What is a writer’s sprint?

It’s simple: set a timer (I like 13 minutes, even numbers feel weird), turn off everything else except your computer, and just write as fast as you can. No editing. No thinking. Just raw, unfiltered, furious writing.

Why does this work?

Because when you’re reacting instead of overthinking, your creative brain kicks in. The pressure of a short window changes how you write, it's kind of like playing dodgeball. You don't have time to hesitate. You move. You react. You get out of your own way.

In a longer writing session, you have time to second-guess every word. But in a sprint, you’re focused, fast, and strangely fearless.

Why every screenwriter should try a writing sprint

Whether you're writing a screenplay, a short film, or just journaling, this is a powerful tool. Even if you're not feeling blocked, it can be a great way to use a small chunk of time—say, before heading out or between meetings.

You’ll be shocked at what comes out of your head when you're up against the clock.

Try it. 13 minutes. Just go.

Whether you're stuck on a scene or need a full read-through, Kpictures provides script notes and creative guidance to move your project forward.
