Behind the Shot: Fashion Photography at The West Side Tennis Club in Queens

This photo is from a fashion editorial I shot at The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens — one of those shoots where everything that could go wrong almost did, but in the end, the work spoke for itself.

It was incredibly windy that day, and we were working with a skeleton crew — just me and my photo assistant. At one point, a sudden gust knocked over one of our lights. My heart definitely skipped a beat, but thankfully, nothing was damaged and we kept pushing through.

I wanted to share this specific image because of how well it came together compositionally. The historic building in the background lines up beautifully with the model, and the viewer’s eye is guided exactly where it should go. That’s actually why the magazine selected this frame as the lead image for the spread.

The full shoot consisted of around eight photos — all featuring different models placed throughout the grounds of the club, each telling a distinct visual story. I’ll dig those up soon and share more.

Since it’s summer, this felt like the perfect time to revisit and post it.
